For anyone who wants to live in Madinah or spend a long time there, transportation is an important part of your time there.
Even if some places are close enough to walk, the heat during the day can make walking difficult. Here are some of the main ways to get around Madinah.
Rental Car
A rental car is a good choice if you have money and plan to drive often or go sightseeing. It gives you freedom to travel outside the city as well. But if you are staying near the Haram, a car is not always helpful because the area around the Haram is made for walking, not driving.
Uber or Taxi
Uber and taxis both work well, but they are a little different. With Uber, you use the app to choose your pickup place, drop-off location, and price. You just get in the car, ride, and then pay if you choose to use cash. Uber is often cheaper.
Taxis can be useful if you do not have your phone with you, but they are usually more expensive and more willing to haggle with you over price.
Bike or Electric Scooter
Many people in Madinah now use bikes or electric scooters. Some streets are designed to make this easy. It is slower than a car but gives you more freedom to reach places cars cannot go. There are also bike racks with bikes and scooters you can rent for a short time.
Walking
Walking is always an option. It is best to walk in the evening or after the heat has gone down. If you are staying in a hotel near the Haram, you will find almost everything you need within walking distance. Walking also helps you stay active and get more steps each day.
