Delta Air lines to launch nonstop Asia flights from Detroit

Delta Air Lines Inc. plans to start nonstop flights this week from Detroit to Seoul Incheon International Airport and Hong Kong.

The routes, together with expanded flights to Shanghai, are part of Delta’s effort to build its hub in Detroit into a gateway to Asia.

Delta said Tuesday that it offers nonstop service from Detroit to 28 international destinations including five in Asia. The airline is seeking regulatory approval to add service to Tokyo’s Haneda Airport, complementing flights between Detroit and Tokyo’s Narita Airport.

Detroit Metropolitan Airport was a hub for Northwest Airlines, which Delta bought in 2008.

Delta shares rose 7 cents to $13.65 in morning trading.
